Tokaj The birthplace of the “wine of kings”
In the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, a protected designation of origin system is in place, meaning that grapes, must, or wine from other regions cannot be imported, except in bottled form.
The region is characterized by long, humid, sunny autumns, which are ideal for the shriveling of grape berries and the development of noble rot. Thanks to this unique climate, Hungary’s most concentrated dessert wines in terms of alcohol, sugar, and acidity are produced here, along with outstanding expressions of Furmint and Hárslevelű. Other characteristic grape varieties of the region include Sárgamuskotály, Zéta, Kövérszőlő, and Kabar. Besides Tokaj itself, several nearby settlements are also renowned for viticulture, such as Tarcal, Mád, Tállya, Tolcsva, and Erdőbénye.
A wide range of wine-related programs awaits visitors: local winemakers offer scenic vineyard walks and picnics showcasing the region’s exceptional vineyards, while dedicated wine buses are available for those interested in wine tastings or wine dinners. The region offers countless opportunities for wine lovers: the vineyards can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by off-road vehicle, or even by electric transport.
