3-day thematic discovery tour in the Tokaj and Zemplén region

The following three-day program recommendation guides visitors through a unique thematic route across the Tokaj and Zemplén region. Alongside memorial sites connected to the “miracle rabbis,” synagogues, and historic villages, the itinerary is shaped by local gastronomic stops, wine region experiences, and cultural attractions. The aim of the program is to present the region’s stories and values as a complex, experience-based travel opportunity.

Day 1: Handmade flavours, urban atmosphere, and Tokaj heritage

The day begins in Tokaj, where it is recommended to start with a visit to Tokaj Ízes Örömest – Lekvárium. Handmade jams and local specialties offer insight into the region’s traditional gastronomic world and provide a pleasant introduction to the rest of the day.

This is followed by a short stop at Tokaj Telt-Ház, which reflects the atmosphere and flavours of local hospitality, further enriching the day’s gastronomic experiences.

In the afternoon, a visit to the Tokaj World Heritage Wine Museum and the Tokaj Museum offers insight into the history of the wine region, its cultural heritage, and its World Heritage significance. The exhibitions and collections provide a deeper understanding of the region’s past and traditions.

Day 2: In the footsteps of the miracle rabbis – synagogues, memorial sites, and gastronomic stops

The second day follows a thematic cultural route connecting memorial sites related to the miracle rabbis, synagogues, and historic settlements of the region. The route starts in Tokaj and passes through several settlements in the Zemplén and Bodrogköz areas, where religious heritage and local cultural values come into focus.

A key stop along the route is Bodrogkeresztúr, where, in addition to the grave of the miracle rabbi, the Acetánia Vinegar Museum offers a unique gastronomic experience, providing insight into the world of traditional and modern vinegar production, complemented by tastings.

In Tarcal and Mád, synagogues and Jewish heritage sites highlight the cultural diversity of the region, while in Mád, the Mádi Sajt artisan cheese workshop offers a gastronomic stop showcasing local cheese-making traditions.

The route continues through Tállya, Abaújszántó, and Erdőbénye, where the wine region atmosphere and historic village structure are strongly present. Near Abaújszántó, in Encs, the Anyukám Mondta restaurant is a recommended stop, while in Olaszliszka a synagogue memorial site recalls the area’s religious past. In Sárospatak, the Boros wine bar offers a pleasant wine-focused stop.

Day 3: From Sárospatak to Tokaj – historical experiences and a Bodrog river cruise

The day can begin in the Sárospatak area, where Rákóczi Castle offers a visit to one of the region’s most important historical landmarks. The castle’s architecture and exhibitions provide insight into the town’s past and cultural heritage.

This is followed by a scenic boat trip on the Bodrog River between Sárospatak and Tokaj. During the slow river journey, the bends of the river, riverside settlements, and the landscape of the Zemplén region unfold from a peaceful perspective.

The day can conclude in Tokaj with an evening wine tasting cruise, where the atmosphere of the Bodrog River and the wines of the Tokaj wine region come together to provide a memorable closing experience for the three-day itinerary.
