Program Package 2 days among Tokaj’s stories, wines, and the sights of Zemplén
The two-day program connects the cultural, spiritual, and gastronomic sites of the Zemplén region into an experience-based itinerary. From historic synagogues and places linked to the Csodarabbis, through wine region villages and panoramic viewpoints, to museums and iconic sights of Zemplén, the program continuously shifts between quieter, more contemplative moments and rich, discovery-filled experiences. Over the two days, local flavors, artisanal products, wineries, and unique natural sites complete the journey, while the region reveals its historical heritage, cultural diversity, and welcoming atmosphere.
Day 1: Synagogues, local flavors, and cultural heritage
The journey may begin in Tokaj, in the area of Tourinform Tokaj, following an itinerary that connects the region’s key sites of Jewish cultural heritage, memorial places, and gastronomic stops into a full-day discovery experience. Along the Csodarabbik nyomában pilgrimage route, historical sites and spiritual landmarks are complemented by local flavors, artisanal products, and wine region experiences.
In Tokaj, after visiting the synagogue, a short culinary stop may be made at Ízes Örömest – Lekvárium, where handmade jams and local delicacies are available. From there, the route may continue towards Bodrogkeresztúr, where, next to the resting place of the wonder rabbi, the Acetánia Vinegar Museum offers a unique experience with vinegar tastings and demonstrations. Local gastronomic options such as Karám Bor & Gasztro and Dereszla Bisztró may also be included along the way, highlighting the flavors of the Tokaj wine region.
The afternoon section may continue in Tarcal, where the Terézia Chapel and its surroundings offer a short break and panoramic views of the wine region. The day may conclude in Mád, an important site of Jewish heritage, where, alongside a visit to the synagogue, local artisanal products and culinary offerings from Mádi Sajt and Édes Mádkám may provide a fitting closing experience to the day.
Day 2: Along panoramas, cellar rows, and the heritage of Zemplén
The second day follows a suggested route that showcases the diverse landscape of Zemplén: wine region villages, natural attractions, historic memorial sites, and cultural stops can be linked into a rich full-day exploration. The focus is on the meeting of landscape and built heritage, as well as the atmosphere of the wine region, complemented by viewpoints, cellar rows, and museum sites.
In the Tállya and Abaújszántó area, the surroundings of Sauska may be included in the route, where the winery experience is paired with a striking setting and an elegant, panoramic gastronomic space. The Barka Gallery Hotel and Restaurant may serve as a culinary stop, while the Simai Lookout offers a short detour with sweeping views over the Zemplén hills. In Erdőbénye, the Illés Cellar provides insight into local winemaking traditions.
In Olaszliszka, the synagogue memorial site recalls the region’s Jewish heritage, followed by the Sárospatak area, where the Megyer-hegyi Tengerszem natural attraction, the historical exhibitions of the Rákóczi Museum, and the Hercegkút Gombos-hegyi cellar row together form one of the highlights of the route.
The day may conclude in Sátoraljaújhely, where, alongside the resting place of the wonder rabbi, the Kazinczy Ferenc Museum, the National Cohesion Bridge, and the Prison Museum complete the historical and cultural layers of Zemplén.
